Fully Funded OIST Internship in Japan – Applications Now Open

The OIST Graduate School is offering education and research opportunities through their Research Internship program in STEM fields.

The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology in Japan is offering fully funded internships for the year 2025. The intership is open for both national (Japanese) and international students of all over the globe. Internship is available for Bachelors and Masters Students.

The internship offers chance to research within the world’s most innovative laboratories. It is allowing students to gain technical skills and intently contribute to the research programs at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology.

The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) is a cutting-edge university in Onna, Okinawa, Japan. The University was established in 2011, University is funded mostly by the Japanese government and focuses on high-quality research, technology transfer, and industrial innovation in Okinawa.

The internship duration will be around three to six months and will start tentatively from October 1, 2025 to March 31, 2026. Application portal for the internship is now open and the last date to apply for the application process on official website is April 15, 2025.

The internship programme is available in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields. Students studying Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Neuroscience, Mathematics, Computational Science, Environmental, Ecological, Marine Sciences, Engineering, and Medical are eligible for this internship.

The interns will receive a daily payment of 2400 JPY (INR 1,346.70) excluding weekends. In addition, interns will get a complimentary OIST shuttle bus pass and a funded one direct round-trip air ticket. Accommodations, either on or off campus, will be fully furnished. The programme will also offers support in acquiring visas, completing insurance procedures, and facilitating local registration for interns.

Applicants eligible for this internship must be in their last two years of an undergraduate or master’s programme, either in Japan or abroad. Recent graduates are also eligible to apply for the internship. Students who are currently enrolled, must obtain approval for the OIST internship from their institution. Additionally, applicants’ academic backgrounds should align with the desired internship unit at OIST.

The documents required for the internship are:

  1. Transcript and Diploma: Scanned copies of your current academic transcript and any other transcript from your past degree (BSc, MSc, etc.) along with completed diploma (BSc, MSc, etc.) in PDF format.
  2. Statement of Purpose: This should be no more than 400 words (2500 characters).
  3. Recommendation Letter: Each applicant is required to have at least one and no more than three letters of recommendation from professorial-level faculty who knows you and your work personally.
  4. Passport: The application system requires applicants to provide their passport number and upload a scan of the passport photo page. It is essential for applicants from outside Japan to have a valid passport for travel to Japan. Ensure that you include your passport details during the application process.
  5. ID Photo: The applicants have to upload a recent photo taken within the last three months, showing the face from the front in standard passport orientation.

The application fee for the Research Internship Program is 3,000 JPY that is 1,730 INR.
